Current cryogenic vials cannot be submerged into liquid nitrogen, due to the effect the extreme cold of the liquid nitrogen has on plastics and risk of explosion.
- Cryogenic temperatures induce significant shrinkage and embrittlement of plastics, which makes any sealing system ineffective against liquid nitrogen.
- Liquid nitrogen also has a relatively low surface tension, which makes it easier to seep into the vial. So there is currently no screw-top cryogenic vial on the market today that can claim to be leakproof in liquid nitrogen.
- Once liquid nitrogen has gotten into the vial, there is a significant risk that the vial will explode during thawing, in addition to the potentially deleterious effects of the liquid nitrogen on the sample. A simple calculation shows that 0.5 g of liquid nitrogen in a 1.5 ml vial will generate a pressure of 4,053 psi when it evaporates. Failure of the screw threads can turn the cap into a projectile with an initial velocity of up to 296 miles per hour (132 meters/sec)! (Source)
To solve these critical issues for safe sample storage, we have designed the first completely closed device of its kind available.
Made from state of the art materials using a patented design, the system was purpose built to meet the demands of today's transfusion medicine and cell therapy industry.

The CellSeal™ system is equipped with an inlet septum and microbial-barrier vent for easy fluid transfer. Using a sterile syringe, fluids can be removed from any transfer device to be processed for storage. The lack of a vacuum allows for complete fill capacity. After transferring fluid into the vial, the tubing can be sealed using any standard blood tubing sealer to create a closed system.
-
For sample recovery, once thawed the vent is opened and the retrieval septum can be accessed with a sterile syringe. Because no vacuum is created, retrieval of the desired amount of sample fluid is made easy with no damage to cells from vacuum compression. The conical shaped septum combined with optimum drainability of the materials allows for recovery of the vial's entire contents.
-
To further meet the critical unmet needs of the cryogenic storage industry, the innovative CellSeal™ design also permits the creation of multiple sealed segments on the inlet tubing thereby providing numerous and easily accessible test samples which can be removed from the primary sample if needed.
-
Storage in boxes or on canes is convenient and readily achieved, and CellSeal™ polypropylene or cardboard boxes are available, as are freezer storage racks for cabinet or dewar style storage units.
-
Several options available: volume, tube size, foil covered retrieval septum. Vials are available in 5mL or 2mL sizes with or without the extended inlet tubing for integral segments.
